never played or coached before?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b90c867 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b90c867\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you have never played before, you can still easily coach at the U5-U8 levels. The emphasis on those younger ages are (1) having fun and (2) learning ball control. Ball control is learned through teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/centexstorm.com\/technical-resources\/\">very basic techniques<\/a> about how to use your feet, and then lots and lots of practice touching the ball as much as possible. Generally, this practice comes from playing small-sided games (3v3, etc.) or playing <a href=\"https:\/\/centexstorm.com\/soccer-mini-games\/\">mini-games<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the children&#8217;s age increases, it becomes a little bit more difficult to coach because there&#8217;s a lot more to know. If you haven&#8217;t played before, you will need to do some research. You should take the <a href=\"https:\/\/learning.ussoccer.com\/coach\">US Soccer Learning Center&#8217;s grassroots free introduction coaching courses<\/a>, which explain the methodology of how to run practices. Pair that with guidance from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/centexstorm.com\/technical-resources\/\">technical skills<\/a> and you&#8217;ll be well on your way.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When possible, we&#8217;ll try to pair new coaches of older age brackets with more experienced mentors or assign the new coach as an assistant coach. Having 2 coaches at the U10+ stages makes a big difference! However, strictly speaking, that&#8217;s not necessary.\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>Concerning practice, coaching at the U5 and U6 levels generally involve 1 practice a week and 1 game.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: var( --e-global-color-7049ee0 ); color: var( --e-global-color-00e1299 );\">At higher levels, there may be 1-2 practices a week and 1 game.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: var( --e-global-color-7049ee0 ); color: var( --e-global-color-00e1299 );\">Practices take a little bit of preparation time to create your practice plans. Other coaches may be willing to share their practice plans with you as well.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: var( --e-global-color-7049ee0 ); color: var( --e-global-color-00e1299 );\">In addition, you generally have to arrive early to setup the cones and goals for practices. If you can get parent help with equipment setup and teardown, it&#8217;s a big help!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: var( --e-global-color-7049ee0 ); color: var( --e-global-color-00e1299 );\">Apart from that, the amount of time you put into it is up to you. Some coaches live and breath soccer; some are able to compartmentalize it to just planning for practice, practice, and games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-16c0edc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"16c0edc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a523bb0\" data-id=\"a523bb0\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-443d1fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"443d1fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What am I expected to do as a coach? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff40fe3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff40fe3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As the coach, you have a number of responsibilities:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Work with the field scheduler for your practice time and field<\/li>\n<li>Plan for practice, hold practices, and coach games<\/li>\n<li>Communicate with parents concerning the plan and expectations for practices, games, and other activities<\/li>\n<li>Distribute information, trophies, and picture packets on behalf of the club to the parents&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Pick up gear and jerseys from the club<\/li>\n<li>Pass out pictures and trophies. This could be at an end of year team party.<\/li><li>Communicate with the club&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><br>If you have parents who are willing to help out, you can delegate a number of these responsibilities to the parents to handle on behalf of the team. Sometimes you will have parents who will help, sometimes not. Do I have to provide it? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32c4da4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32c4da4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are a number of pieces of equipment that are essential to coach:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Balls &#8211; each player should have a size appropriate ball to practice with. The league has spare balls if a player is not able to provide one.<\/li>\n<li>Cones &#8211; the league can provide some cones. Cones become your boundaries in small-sided and mini-games, and if you don&#8217;t have goals, the goals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<p>The rest of the equipment is not required and is not supplied by the club. However, as the coach, you should also have:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>An air pump<\/li>\n<li>Spare needles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is helpful to have, but it is not essentially necessary to have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Soccer pinnies (the colored jerseys you slip over your shirt)<\/li>\n<li>Small goals for small-sided games. The practice fields may or may not have goals.
